The Anglican Communion in Nigeria carries a rich and honorable tradition — the sacred order of Knighthood. What began centuries ago as a mission to defend the Christian faith has evolved into a modern commitment to service, leadership, and the growth of the Church.
The Origins of Knighthood
Knighthood traces back to the medieval crusades, where the original “Soldiers of Christ” vowed to protect the faith and reclaim the Holy Land. These men and women displayed courage, discipline, and unwavering dedication — values that still define knighthood today.
Over time, the mission of Knights grew beyond battlefields to serving communities, protecting the vulnerable, and upholding Christian values in society.
Knighthood in Nigeria
Knighthood made its way to Nigeria during the colonial era, though initially as a secular honor. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the Anglican Church of Nigeria revived ecclesiastical knighthood, giving it new meaning: honoring faithful lay members while calling them to deeper responsibility in evangelism and Church development.
Today, nearly every diocese across the country has embraced the tradition, with six main Orders recognized by the House of Bishops, including:
- Order of Saint Christopher – Patron saint of travelers
 - Order of Saint Paul – Honoring commitment to evangelism
 - Order of Saint Augustine – Dedicated to service and learning
 - Order of the Good Shepherd – Focused on pastoral care
 - Order of Saint Mary – Exemplifying purity and devotion
 - Order of Ladies of Bethany – Dedicated to women serving the mission of Christ

A Call to Deeper Service
Knighthood is more than a title — it is a calling. Members are challenged to live lives of faith, integrity, and leadership, actively supporting their parishes, dioceses, and communities. The investiture of new Knights symbolizes not only honor but also responsibility: to protect the Church, support its mission, and be examples of Christ-like service.
Looking Ahead
As the Anglican Church of Nigeria continues to grow globally, the role of Knights remains vital. From local parishes to international missions, Knights are called to be witnesses of faith in a complex and changing world.
The journey of a Knight is one of discipline, humility, and service. It’s not just about wearing regalia but embodying the values that have sustained this sacred order for centuries: faith, courage, and love for God and His Church.
